This DIY no sew fleece blanket is my favorite DIY project. It’s inexpensive, simple to make and doesn’t take a ton of time. I’m going to show you how to easily make your very own no new fleece blanket! I make these for my pets (and the animal shelter) but they can be for humans also!
DIY No Sew Fleece Blanket
What you’ll need:
- Fiskars fabric scissors
- 2 pieces of fleece with different patterns (I used a half yard of each pattern, but you can use any amount depending on how big you want your blanket)
Directions:
Start by laying one of your fleece patterns on a flat surface. I like to use my kitchen counter. Cut the fabric if you need to make any adjustments to the size.
Lay the other fabric pattern on top of the first one. You want the edges to line up. You can trim any excess fabric, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. Be sure that the side of the fabric that you want facing out is on top and face down on the counter top.
Starting with one side of the fabric, you will cut rectangular pieces that are about 1 inch wide and 3.5 inches long. You want the pieces to be thin and long enough to tie a knot. Cut these pieces almost along the entire side of the fabric, but leave a few inches of fabric so you can cut a square out to make proper corners.
On each corner of the fabric you will want to cut out a square to ensure you don’t have funky corners of the blanket.
Now you can begin tying the rectangular pieces you just cut. Tie each of them in a simple knot. Don’t be afraid to pull and maneuver the fleece, as the fabric does tend to stretch. I like to straighten and pull on the fabric after I tie a few pieces. This keeps the blanket smoother and more square.
Continue the cutting and knotting process on each side of the blanket. If you get some bubbles in your fabric, don’t worry! Just pull the fabric a bit for it to straighten out. But there will probably be a couple of creases here and there when you’re finished.
Side Notes For Your DIY No Sew Fleece Blanket
I bought my fabric at Hobby Lobby but JoAnn Fabrics has a much bigger selection of fleece to choose from. I bought 1 yard of each pattern, which costed me about $13.00 total. I only used half a yard of each for the blanket I made, so the cost of the one shown above would have been about $7.00 or so.
What’s great about this no sew fleece blanket is that you can choose any colors, patterns or size you want! They make great gifts for pets and humans. You can use these blankets in a pet stroller, kennel or anywhere you’d like! You can even make them to donate to your local animal shelter!

Such a good idea! I did a blanket like this last year but I didn’t cut the strips long enough and they were so hard to tie. You live and you learn! I should re-try!

I actually like both patterns, but think I like the pawprint one a bit better. For one thing, I think it wouldn’t show the dirt as easily and I have three rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds who manage to find every tiny mud puddle and love to track dirt and mud into the house – and onto their blankets and beds.
