Make a super fun “rescue mom” backpack for under $12!
I love arts and crafts. Even better, I love making super cute personalized items for a very small cost! I have made a lot of “dog mom” items for myself, but when I saw this backpack at Walmart, a new idea came to mind! I have many totes bags that I use on a regular basis when we travel, shop, go to a play date or head to agility, but I figured a backpack would be phenomenal because Wynston can’t poke his little head in and steal treats! It’s also great to throw in the car or in Wyn’s stroller without worrying about items falling out!
DIY Rescue Mom Backpack
What you need:
– backpack: You can’t beat the price of $3.97 for a backpack! I found it at Walmart. They had only a couple colors.
– iron on letters: These 4 sheets of letters have supplied me with enough letters for 3 personalized items so far. $3.99 at Hobby Lobby.
– ribbon: 9 foot spool of paw print ribbon from Walmart, $1.97.
– fabric paint: $1.49 Hobby Lobby (I thought about using the silver glitter, but decided it may be too messy).
Start by laying out your letters to decide what looks best. I moved mine around a bit to make sure I got the spacing that worked the best for me. You can do all sorts of measuring if you want, but I want mine to look homemade. I love when people ask me “Where did you get that?” Quite fun when I reply with “Oh, I made it!”
Turn your iron to medium heat and iron on your letters. With this backpack material, it took a little bit longer. I spent about 10 minutes ironing, just to ensure the letters were adhering to the fabric.
While the letters were cooling off, I cut off the black pieces of fabric that were sewn to the silver zippers. I tied some ribbon through the zipper hole and made a cute little bow. Adorable, fun touch to add!
After the letters are completely cooled off, you can outline your letters with fabric paint. I contemplated using silver glitter – not only is it messy, but I decided blue would make the letters pop more. Since I used black polka dot letters against a black backpack, I needed to add some color.
The best part of this project is you can totally make it your own. Any colors, any letters, any ribbon. This is the perfect accessory to add to any dog mom collection.
