Wynston has made me the luckiest dog mom in the world. He’s the extra most bestest Chihuahua to ever exist. Okay, I may be slightly biased, but he’s truly my heart dog. I often wonder if I’ll adopt another Chihuahua after Wynston, because I feel like he’s one of a kind. He’s taught me that Chihuahuas, although tiny and portrayed poorly in the media, are delightful, loving, dedicated dogs. I personally think Chihuahuas are the best dogs ever, and here I explain why.
Reasons Why Chihuahuas Are The Best Dogs Ever
Before adopting Wynston in 2012 I didn’t know anything about Chihuahuas. But eight years later, I’ve learned that they are an incredibly underestimated breed. I believe Chihuahuas are the best dogs ever because of these reasons:
Provide loyal companionship.
Chihuahuas are one of the most loyal breeds out there. Why? Because that’s literally what they were bred to do. Chihuahuas were originally bred to provide their humans with companionship, and they have never lost this trait. Chihuahuas, though small, are committed guard dogs who prefer to shadow their favorite human at all times.
Thrive in any size home.
Whether you live in a mansion, tiny home, apartment or RV, Chihuahuas will thrive. This small breed doesn’t need much space to exercise and enjoy life. As long as they are with their human, Chihuahuas will be happy!
They make great family or single person dogs.
Are you a single person, or do you have a family of five? Chihuahuas are great dogs for any family situation. Although Chihuahuas tend to gravitate toward one person, they can be great family dogs. Just remember to teach your children to respect a dog’s boundaries, as Chihuahuas can easily get hurt or overwhelmed due to their small stature.
Easy to travel with.
Chihuahuas are easy to travel with because they are small! Wynston is a pro traveler. He can fit on an airplane or in any car without issues. And if necessary, you can just pick up your pup and carry them anywhere! Some dog-friendly hotels have weight limits, but you won’t have to worry about that with a Chi.
Enjoy being lazy OR active.
Want to lay on the couch and binge watch Netflix for five hours? Feeling the need to go on a hike? Chihuahuas are happy to do either! Wynston has hiked several miles and competed in agility, and he also loves being lazy. It’s the best of both worlds.
Playful but don’t require a ton of exercise.
Chihuahuas are extremely playful dogs, and a short game of fetch can easily wear them out. This feisty breed doesn’t require a ton of exercise to stay happy and healthy, and they can get plenty of exercise in a small home with a game of tug. It’s nice that you don’t have to run five miles with this breed in order to tire them out.
Long lifespan.
Chihuahuas are the smallest AKC recognized breed, and they live the longest. Generally, the smaller the dog breed, the longer they live. Chihuahuas can live upwards of 16 years! Dogs already don’t live long enough, but at least Chihuahuas have the longest lifespan of them all.
Fairly low maintenance.
Overall, Chihuahuas are fairly low maintenance. They don’t need strenuous exercise or weekly baths, and they are less expensive to take care of due to their tiny size. Even if they get injured or slow down as they age, dog moms can just swoop up their canine companion and carry them or use a dog stroller.
I love being a dog mom to a Chihuahua. The breed brings me endless joy, and Wynston will forever hold a piece of my heart. What is your favorite dog breed?

I have two small pups in mixed breed morkie. Can I buy a new breed chihuahua? Can these two breed live together or it harmful to each other.

I’m sure the pups could live well together if they are properly introduced! We definitely recommend Chihuahua rescue.

Despite never having met Wynston I feel like I know him! He’s a super good boy and a wonderful representation of how great Chihuahuas can be! I also think the saying,
“everyone thinks they have the best dog…and none of them are wrong” – W.R.Purche … is perfect!

That’s one of my favorite quotes! I know I’m slightly biased, but he’s pretty perfect.

I have a purple “sling” that i wear across my shoulder/abdomen. Like a purse-Lea loves it-she gets in her pouch, I harness her in, not that she’s going anywhere, but for safety. The sling is stylish and leaves my arms free to do whatever i need to.
And all the reasons above are why a Chi is the best pet!

Those slings are super helpful!

Thanks for this ode to one of the best breeds out there! I have a rescue Chihuahua named Milo who seems to choose his “favorite” on the daily. One day it’s me, the next my husband, and the next it’s our other rescue dog (a red heeler mix). Milo lets us know his choice by cuddling up to his favorite and staying by their side all day.
The one thing I’ve learned about chihuahuas is that they have notoriously bad teeth. Milo has had 2 dental surgeries in his 10 years. Other than that, they are pretty easy to keep.

I love this article because it debunks myths, as pointed out that get stigmatized by just about every social outlet – but if you raise them right when young and love them as much as they love you the loyalty is never ending. He is definitely my lap dog and will sleep for hours despite my need to shuffle around a little bit. He loves other animals and his best friend was a 75 pound springer spaniel. The pictures are worth 1000 words.
Your Wynston looks like an adorable ‘brother from another mother’ :-). He has the same stripe down his tiny little head. He’s 14 and he’s still — despite sleeping more often – has the energy and pep that he did when he was two years old. He has never bitten or attempted to attack, he doesn’t become obstinate in the face of danger. He does depend on me to pick him up sometimes but that’s more of a DAD thing than a dog thing! He travels everywhere with me and despite a tiny bladder I do everything to make sure he’s comfortable and that just tightens the bond. he doesn’t whine, complain, he just loves people. I wish I could post pictures so you could see how similar they look!!
Thanks so much for sharing as personal experience is just so valuable. He will always be my cuddle buddy.

I so relate to what you wrote. I was not even looking for a dog but my little chi, Cricket, showed up at my work and “chose” me. Although I am her person she is friendly to everyone and has a very sweet disposition. Never have I had a more loving and loyal dog. Such a good traveling companion too.

Chihuahuas are so maligned and underestimated.
