Who would have thought that 3 days after I simply intended to donate Kirby’s items after his passing that I’d be volunteering for that same rescue! And on top of that, I didn’t think I’d already have a pig from there as well!
AZ Piggie Poo Rescue is the only guinea pig rescue in the state of Arizona. It was founded in 2006 by Amanda Ketola. The rescue serves as a helping hand to shelters in California and Utah as well. Their sister rescue is Wee Companions, based out of San Diego. While the rescue is mainly comprised of guinea pigs, there are occasional rats and hamsters that need loving homes also! As of today, they have saved 2,292 critters in 7 states!
Amanda is an amazingly kind hearted woman. I immediately offered my helping hand to her when I rescued Sammie on Saturday. I love the vision, mission and all they do at AZ Piggie Poo Rescue. The rescue is solely funded on donations, adoptions, sales from the boutique shop, corporate funding and private grant funding.
I was very excited to start volunteering at the rescue today. Although it’s a 50 minute drive from my house, it’s completely worth it. Today my duties were giving all of the piggies hay, water and cleaning cages. It was the fastest 3 hours ever!
I have to say, guinea pigs are instant stress relief. Walking into a room with 40 piggies who are squeaking because they are happy to see you just makes the heart melt! The most fun part is going to be getting to know each piggy and seeing them find wonderful families. Some of the pigs would stand up on the cage to greet me every time I’d walk by and others would run away frantically. It’s so much fun to learn their personalities.
My next volunteer day is a week from today and I am already excited! Although I’ve had a guinea pig in my life for the past 6 years, I look forward to learning more about guinea pigs and how the rescue works. I’m also going to get involved in community outreach for AZ Piggie Poo Rescue and I know that as an animal lover, blogger and animal rights activist, I can bring a lot to the table. (Plus I can bring Sammie in anytime to play with the other piggies!)

That place looks like a lot of fun to volunteer at! I had piggies when I was a kid. None now, but I definitely have a soft spot for them.
