Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL) is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona. This year I am making it my mission to become more involved in their cause, as I’ve been an avid AAWL supporter for years. Now I want to take my support a step further, and to do that I am sponsoring an adoptable dog and cat each month! Without further adieu, meet our January AAWL adoptable cat of the month: Boggs! This bobtail beauty is sure to win your heart over!
Resources for Financial Assistance with Veterinary Bills and Pet Food
I know what it’s like to struggle to pay the bills. I’ve been there. I feel for everyone who is there now. What’s even worse is when there’s an emergency and you don’t have the funds you need. This happened to me in November 2011. I was a poor college student living on my own. I had a guinea pig, Kirby, and a cat, Edison. One late night Edison broke his back leg. I rushed him to emergency at 11pm. That one visit costed me about $500. I knew I was in trouble. I wish I had resources back then, so that’s why I’m sharing some with you now. Here are some resources if you need financial assistance with veterinary bills or pet food for your dogs and cats.
What To Do If You Suspect Animal Cruelty
I know it’s a chilling subject, but animal abuse happens everywhere, everyday. It doesn’t matter how rich, poor, nice or mean people are. Animal abusers can be standing next to us in line at the grocery store. Scary thought, right? Although people who abuse animals don’t have a stamp on their forehead (dang it!) you may suspect that a friend, neighbor or even family member is abusing their animals. I have a list of actions you can take if you suspect animal cruelty.
How Many Pets Are “Too Many” Pets?
I almost dread answering the question “how many pets do you have?” For a long time it fluctuated between four and five. Now I’m at six. I have six animals (I prefer to call them my animals instead of pets). Three cats and three dogs. To me, it’s not a big deal at all. But the typical response to my answer is “OH MY GOD you have too many animals!” Um. Not really, actually. There is no clear answer to the question “how many pets are too many pets?” It’s all relative. Let’s go over some factors.
I Toured the AAWL & SPCA Shelter!
Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL) is Arizona’s largest and oldest no-kill shelter. Located in Phoenix, the shelter’s mission is one that all of us can appreciate: to create a world where there are no homeless dogs and cats. Recently I had the opportunity to tour the facility, play with kittens and fall in love with a Husky. Did I mention I got to play with kittens?!
