
As most of you probably know, making homemade dog treats for my pups is one of my favorite activities. I have several DIY dog treat recipes on my blog, but I’ve been inspired by PawCulture™ to create something new! If your dog is having a birthday or there’s a celebration, you can check out Paw Culture’s recipe for a DIY doggie cake. But in the meantime, I’ve created delicious cupcakes (which make my mouth water, if I do say so myself) that my dogs can’t get enough of! These DIY doggie cupcakes are perfect for any type of dog birthday party, get together, event…or just for fun!
Let’s bake some DIY doggie cupcakes!
What you’ll need:
- Cupcake pan(s)
- Colorful cupcake liners
- One egg
- 3 tbsp pure pumpkin
- 2 cups water
- 3/4 cup peanut butter (make sure the peanut butter does not contain Xylitol)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/4 tbsp baking soda (or 1 tbsp baking powder)
- 1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt
- dog treats of your choice
To begin the DIY doggie cupcakes baking process, preheat your oven to 350°. Next you will want to prepare your batter by mixing the pumpkin, 1/4 cup peanut butter, egg, water and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture until it creates a light broth.
In a separate bowl, mix the whole wheat flower and baking soda. Slowly pour the flour mixture into the watery mixture and whisk together. This will create a smooth, creamy batter.
Now it’s time to prepare your cupcake pan. Place a cupcake liner in each space. You may want to spray a bit of organic canola oil into each holder to keep the cupcakes from sticking. Spoon the batter into each holder. You will want to fill them almost to the top.
The batter will settle in the cupcake holders rather quickly, so once you are finished you can put the pan in the oven. Bake for 30 minutes. When the cupcakes are ready to come out of the oven, be sure to stick a toothpick in the center cupcake. If the toothpick comes out clean, the cupcakes are finished.
While the cupcakes are baking you will want to make your icing. Pour the Greek yogurt and 1/2 cup of peanut butter into a bowl. Mix the two ingredients together until it’s well blended. Put the mixture in the refrigerator until your cupcakes are done baking and completely cooled off. You don’t want to ice your cupcakes while they are warm, or the top layer of cake will start coming off.
Now for the super fun part! You can use a knife or icing bag to decorate your DIY doggie cupcakes. Once you’re finished applying the icing, put a dog treat on each one, and voila! Delectable cupcakes for your pampered pooch!
Your DIY doggie cupcakes are ready for your pups to enjoy! To store them, put them in a covered cake or cupcake pan and keep them in the refrigerator to preserve freshness.

These cupcakes look so good! I want to eat them! I might have to whip some of these up in March for Luna’s birthday. I know she’ll enjoy them because peanut butter and pumpkin are favorites in our house.
Since they are made of human ingredients, you COULD eat them! I love this recipe because it requires basic ingredients and it’s easy to make. Perfect for any occasion.

I had made this and the dough is insanely sticky , worse then pizza dough. I added the flour slowly while mixing, is it supposed to be 4 cups? Thank you 🙂 I was really excited to try this but the batter didn’t turn out creamy 🙁

Can these be frozen (with or without the icing)?
Yes they can, but I recommend taking the cupcake liners off first before freezing them. And of course let them thaw before giving them to your dog 🙂
I just made these for Easter, going to be with family, and we all have fur babies. My batter to was thick and sticky….
If you used regular baking flour, that will make it thick and sticky. I used whole wheat flour. All of the pictures, ingredients and instructions are exactly how I made them 🙂
I just made this recipe. It is really thick and super sticky. I followed your instructions closely. I used whole wheat flour which I always use for dog treats. I’m hoping I can salvage the cakes and next will try only using 3 cups of flour.

Thanks! I actually think I know what went wrong. When I use peanut butter I use homemade peanut butter. I think that’s what happened.

Is there something I can replace the pumpkin with? Pumpkin always ends up giving my pup the poops…….
Pumpkin is a natural digestive for dogs, which is why it does that. I haven’t tried the cupcakes with anything else, so I can’t offer other suggestions.
