I am so thrilled that there is a month dedicated to guinea pigs! I’ve had a guinea pig in my life for over 6 years now. I recently lost my Kirby on 1-23-15 and shortly after, I rescued my Sammie from AZ Piggie Poo Rescue. I also started volunteering for the rescue and it’s been amazing!
Many people don’t realize that there are small animal rescues out there with guinea pigs, rats, ferrets and hamsters that need homes just as cats and dogs do. Cruel people have “pig farms” that are similar to puppy mills, which they run in order to sell guinea pigs for money. Too many guinea pigs end up abused, neglected or dead.
Before you bring home a guinea pig, make sure they are right for your family. They require much more maintenance than the average person may think. Check out some general information here.
Also, instead of buying a piggy, I’d suggest rescue, as I do for ALL animals. After all, rescued is the best breed! Search in your area to see if there is a small animal rescue before you get a guinea pig from a sketchy breeder or pet store.
Where can I rescue a guinea pig?
Look for a local small animal rescue in your area! Here are a couple in the West:
Update: Sam passed away on 6/5/15. His life was short and his death was tragic but he was an absolutely special, wonderful piggie.
Do you have a a special guinea pig or any small animals in your life?
