What I love about La Verne, CA is all of the local, small businesses. It has such a small town feel. Whenever we visit our home, we frequent a pizza place, doughnut shop and pet depot, all of which are locally owned. As usual, we had to take a trip to Katie’s Pet Depot, a super fun pet store that has everything you could possibly need! We loaded Khloee and Wynston into the car and made the grueling two minute drive.
The first thing I saw when we walked into the door were three very small puppies in an area that said “animal adoption center.” To be honest, I was skeptical. They were such adorable, tiny puppies and I feared they came from a puppy mill. As we walked toward the back of the store, we came across kittens. Lots of gorgeous, tiny kittens. I wanted alllll of the kittens! But still, I was nervous. Where did all of these adorable animals come from? I also felt bad for the baby kitties, as I think they could have been in a better conditions. Their area was clean, it was just too small for my liking. Hopefully they will find good homes soon.
We walked around a bit and picked up some Smart Bones and rawhides for my babies to enjoy. The store offers only very healthy and natural dog foods, including Merrick and Natural Balance, and they have a wide array of toys and accessories.
Khloee was extremely interested in the birds for sale and enjoyed watching the fish swim around. She was extremely curious about all of the animal life, and when she spotted the kittens, it was all over. I think Khloee wanted to take one home as badly as I did. And let’s be real – if we were in AZ, I would have adopted one of those kittens.
When it was time to pay for our merchandise, I asked the clerk “I’m curious – where do you get your puppies and kittens come from?” He replied with “Oh they are all rescues. We also occasionally take in animals if local residents can’t take care of them anymore.” Okay. I felt better. I don’t think he would have lied to me and the signs did talk about “adoption fees,” but you can never be too sure with how prevalent puppy mills are. I left the store happy and glad that I asked. I wouldn’t have made my purchase if the clerk told me the animals came from a breeder of any type.
It was a fun adventure to Katie’s Pet Depot. Khloee and Wynston started enjoying their new bones as soon as we got home and I’m already looking forward to our next visit! Do you have any small local pet stores that you like to visit?
