The 2018 Phoenix Lexus Pet Safety event was the first time in my five year blogging career that I got to bring two of my loves – cars and dogs – together for one amazing cause. Presented by A Girl’s Guide to Cars, this special event was hosted at Earnhardt Lexus to teach pet parents about car safety for dogs and cats. In attendance to teach us all about proper pet restraint in vehicles were two incredible representatives from Sleepypod! I was truly in my element, as not only do I enjoy focusing on traveling with Wynston, but my passion for cars stems from when I was a child. I just wish I could attend the next event 😉 It was too much fun for Wynston and I! I hope you’ll enjoy my photos and some interesting facts that I learned.
2018 Phoenix Lexus Pet Safety Event
Did you know that 100,000 pets lose their lives EACH YEAR due to tragic automobile accidents? And that doesn’t count the dogs that run away and get lost after escaping a vehicle which has been in a crash. However, as pet parents we can do our part to lower this number.
I know you don’t want your beloved dog or cat to be a part of that startling 100k number. I would never be able to live with myself if Wynston died in a car crash because I didn’t have him properly secured. A little side story:
Wynston and I had been visiting Texas and a friend was driving us to the airport around 5am. It pitch black out and we were on a back road to the airport. Well, a deer ran into the road right in front of us. My friend slammed on the brakes and swerved as my seat belt locked up. After the initial panic (we didn’t hit the deer) my first thought was Wynston. But he was fine. I had him safe in his Sleepypod Air in the back seat. Even though it was a 15 minute drive to the airport, I buckled him in, half asleep at 5am. And boy am I glad I did. Wynston would have become a projectile, and he would have definitely been hurt.
At the Lexus Pet Safety event we were lucky enough to watch demonstrations by Sleepypod expert and certified dog trainer, Nicole Ellis. Nicole’s passion for dogs and their safety was very clear. We even did a Facebook live, where Nicole showed us how to properly strap a Sleepypod Air and Mobile Pet Bed into the vehicle. You can watch it here!
Important information I learned at the event:
- Over 100,000 pets lose their lives in vehicle accidents every year.
- Pets under 18lbs should be secured in a carrier, and dogs over 18lbs should be in a safety harness.
- All cats should be secured in a carrier.
- Sleepypod has their own crash test dog dummies with pressure points to ensure all carriers and harnesses are created to the highest safety standards.
- Sleepypod has performed rigorous safety tests on its pet passenger restraints starting with the Sleepypod mobile pet bed in 2008.
- All of the Sleepypod dog safety harnesses and pet carriers are crash-tested at the standard set for child safety restraints.
The Lexus RX
I’ll tell you what – if I could afford it, the Lexus RX would be my vehicle of choice. The beauty is a seven passenger SUV and it’s absolutely luxurious. The space it offers is incredible, and I think Wynston and I would look mighty fine taking our road trips in it! All of the space the Lexus RX offers for cargo and pet strollers is wonderful. I’d love to get my hands on one! It was my favorite vehicle in the Earnhardt Lexus showroom.
A Girl’s Guide to Cars
In the market for a new vehicle? A Girl’s Guide to Cars has the necessary information you need to assist in the process! Did you know that women buy or influence the purchase of 85% of vehicles. With that being said, A Girls Guide to Cars was born as a community of writers, influencers, friends and women who buy, care for, and live their lives in and around their cars: their own car, the family car, and often the cars of family members. If you need help deciding what vehicles is best for you and your loved ones (obviously including dogs and cats), A Girl’s Guide to Cars is there for you!
Wynston and I are so grateful that we were a part of the A Girl’s Guide to Cars Phoenix Lexus Pet Safety event. If you’re interested in more information about traveling with dogs, see all of our tips here! I hope we get to partner with A Girl’s Guide to Cars, Lexus and Sleepypod again the future!
