Many of you know that Matt and I have a second home located in La Verne, CA. We like to go there to relax, hit up the beach and enjoy the small town feel that La Verne offers. We hadn’t been to the house since October 2015. Since then we’ve rescued McKenzie Rae and bought a more suitable SUV for our growing doggy family. We also hadn’t seen Matt’s grandma since we got engaged. Her house is on our way to La Verne so we decided it’d be a good opportunity to drop in on her. This trip was McKenzie’s first road trip and it was a success.
First stop – La Quinta, CA. This is where Matt’s grandma (aka Gram) lives. It’s four hours from our AZ house and two hours from our La Verne house. We stopped at Gram’s house on the way to La Verne. It ended up working out nicely because it gave the dogs a good hour break to run in the grass and enjoy the sun. The visit allowed me to show Gram my ring, wedding dress and discuss some wedding plans. She’s very excited – it’s becoming so real!
After our La Quinta stop, we headed to our house. It was chilly and sprinkling when we arrived, which was a super nice change from the 100° temps we’ve been experiencing in AZ. Wynston and Khloee absolutely love our house in La Verne. It’s homey and has a nice big grass backyard. McKenzie Rae jumped on the bandwagon and decided the house was pretty awesome. After all, if Khloee thinks it’s great, then it must be nothing short of spectacular. As we normally do when we arrive in La Verne, we ordered pizza from a local pizza place and relaxed for the evening. Matt and I were headed to Disneyland the next day.
We spent the day at Disneyland on Friday. It was rainy and cloudy but Matt and I were prepared. It’s amazing how many people don’t look at the weather forecast! I saw that there was a high chance of rain so we wore comfy clothes, tennis shoes and brought an umbrella. Good thing, because by 10am it was pouring! I couldn’t help but laugh at all the women in heels and dresses. Like…it’s Disneyland. Who wears that to Disneyland anyways?! And in the pouring rain…I thought it was amusing.
While most people seemed unhappy about the rain, we loved it since we rarely see dismal weather. It made for an extra fun experience. Matt and I got back to the house in the evening and spent it lounging with the pups. You can imagine I was in bed early.
On Saturday we planned to go to Huntington Dog Beach. We ended up not going because it was supposed to be around 60° and rainy. With a 74% chance of precipitation, we made the decision to stay home and relax. The dogs didn’t seem to mind. They played in the back yard most of the day and we took them on a long walk. There are so many smells and not enough time 😉
We left for Arizona on Sunday morning. It was an easy drive and we arrived at our house around 5pm. Plenty of time to unpack and unwind! Just as the dogs did really well on our road trip to California, they did equally well on our way back. Since it’s a six hour drive each way, we always stop every two hours for potty breaks. It works out perfectly and we have a routine set in place for each trip.
It was another wonderful trip to California. I was happy that McKenzie Rae does as well with long road trips as Khloee and Wynston do. Honestly I’m not sure if we’ll get out to the house the rest of the year. Matt’s looking for new work, we’d like to buy a house and our wedding is in December. We figured we’d better get out there before life gets too crazy. Matt has family nearby the house so they keep tabs on it and Gram even goes to the house to stay sometimes. At least we don’t have to worry about it 🙂
It’s always nice to get settled back in after a road trip. Now Matt and I are bearing down to get serious about the rest of our wedding planning. The next 7.5 months are going to fly by!
Do you ever go on road trips with your dogs? Do they do well in the car?
