Wynston and I have a boundless amount of travel experience. We mostly adventure in our car (although sometimes we do fly), and there are several items that I will not leave home without when we do.
Typically we travel to moderate or warm climates, where bringing specialty items isn’t necessary. However, you definitely need to consider packing differently if you’re heading to a cold part of the world. Here’s my personal list of cold weather travel essentials for dog moms.

Cold Weather Travel Essentials for Dog Moms
Hitting the road (or skies) this winter with your best furry friend? The products on our list will make any dog mom’s travels easier and more enjoyable.
Heating Pad
There are a ton of heating pads and blankets on the market. I personally like traveling with a small electric heating pad for Wynston. It’s small enough to pack in any suitcase, and it’s multi-purpose. Dog moms can use a heating pad in a kennel, stroller, bed and a variety of other circumstances.
Rather than a heating pad, you can pack a heated blanket instead. Blankets will take up more space and weigh more, but that most likely won’t be an issue if you’re driving to your destination. If you and your dog are taking a road trip, you can even buy a heated blanket that plugs straight into your cigarette lighter!
Extra Blankets
I suggest packing at least one extra warm blanket if you’re traveling to a cold climate. You never know when you and your dog will need a bit of extra warmth.
Dog Sweater
Always pack a sweater for your dog. It’s absolutely a cold weather travel essential for dog moms to pack. No matter how big your dog is, they will appreciate an additional layer. Although, I will admit that the exception is Northern breed dogs who were bred for snow, such as Huskies or a Great Pyrenees. Small dog sweaters cost as little as $7 at Walmart!
Dog Coat
Sweaters are great for lounging or a ride in the car, but a coat will be helpful for romping in the snow. Coats are generally weatherproof and warm. I especially love Wynston’s coat from Land’s End. It’s a fleece-lined, water-resistant coat, and it even has reflective trim.
Snow Boots
Dog paws are tough, but they still get cold and will succumb to the elements if left unprotected for long periods of time. Wynston has snow boots from Ultra Paws. Ultra Paws dog boots are durable, flexible and great for cold OR heat! I like that they are available in petite and extra-small sizes.
Puppy Pads
If you’re traveling to a snowy climate and your dog isn’t used to going potty under those conditions, I recommend packing some puppy pads. Your dog may end up completely resisting having to do their business in the snow, in which case you’ll need a back up plan.
