For a long time now I’ve been wanting to travel with Wynston. You know, just hit the road and see where it takes us. I want to explore the country, write about it and enjoy every second with my son. Well folks, it’s happening. Instead of continuing to put it off, I decided to just do it! My life has been about doing what I love and taking risks, so this time is no different. On August 31st I head out with Wynston for our first road trip – just the two of us! We’re going to see some of the Southwest. Destinations: New Mexico and Texas.
Dog Mom Road Trip
There are several “firsts” occurring on this trip. One being the fact that I’ve never driven 6+ hours by myself. Luckily I’m not worried one bit. Wynston is amazing in the car and he enjoys road trips. We’ll stop as frequently as we need and take our time. I’m grateful that there is no rush on this trip.
I haven’t been to New Mexico in years and Wynston has never been, so that’s our next “first.” About a month ago I saw a picture of White Sands, NM and I thought to myself, “Wow, I want to go there!” So guess what? I’m going there with my boy! All of the imagery I’ve seen of the gorgeous, flowing white sands are going to make for some incredible social media shares 😉 I can’t wait to experience the peaceful plains with my son.
Another “first” is going to El Paso, TX! I’ve been to Texas plenty of times, and Wynston has been as well. But we’re going to explore downtown El Paso. It’s right near the border of Mexico, but it looks like such a cool place! El Paso is home to the minor league baseball team, the Chihuahuas, so you can bet that I plan on hitting up the stadium for some photos!
The Plan
We head out the morning of August 31. Our first destination is White Sands, NM which is about a 6 hour 20 minute drive. We’ll spend some time there, get some great photos, enjoy it, then head an hour and a half south to our final destination of El Paso. We will check in to our hotel suite the night of the 31st. Since it’s all happening over Labor Day weekend, I’ll be happy to get my traveling done that Thursday as opposed to Friday.
While in El Paso, we’ll do some networking for work and see the local sites. My dad has been to El Paso several times, so he’s made me aware of some perfect photo opportunities. Downtown is newly developed and updated, so it’ll be a super cool experience. I plan to really take it easy and enjoy my time with Wynston. After all, this trip is mostly about time away with my boy and experiencing the country.
Our To Do List
- Stop at the NM and TX state lines/welcome signs, assuming there isn’t traffic and we aren’t in danger if we leave the car.
- Visit White Sands National Monument (which is dog friendly!)
- Hit up the El Paso Chihuahuas stadium (about 10 minutes from our hotel)
- Take pictures at the Pile o’ Gators statue
- Stop at the Chamizal National Memorial – the old border of Mexico
- Try to get photos of the Mexico/US border
- Search out any significant historical landmarks
- Relax and eat lots of food!
Are you a pet brand who would like to put your name on our travel experience?! Wynston and I are looking for travel sponsors! I currently have several sponsor packages that I am offering, and your company could be a part of our journey. Email me at amanda@dogmomdays dot com if you would like to work with us 🙂
I am beyond ecstatic for this trip with Wynston. It’s going to be full of fun and great memories. Assuming everything goes well, we’d like to visit CO, CA and WA next.
So tell me, do you ever travel with your dog just to get away and enjoy the country?
