Living in Arizona in July is like living in a hair dryer that never turns off. Although I prefer the dry heat over humidity, it doesn’t mean that 115 degrees isn’t miserable. Growing up in the Midwest, the 4th of July was a big celebration. I remember having huge barbecues with all of the neighbors and setting off fireworks all night. Well, in Arizona, the only way you’re barbecuing is if you’re taking a dip in the pool every 5 minutes.
My baby brother always loved the 4th of July. I think he just wanted to blow stuff up, but his excitement made the holiday that much more fun. Now that he’s in the US Army, currently deployed in Latvia, America’s Independence Day has lost a bit of it’s luster around here.
Matt and I had my dad over on 4th of July eve. We munched on pizza and watched the D-backs baseball game. Dad also brought his dog Sophie over, who was my foster dog many years ago. She didn’t make it very far 😉 Sophie and Khloee have a blast playing together. That was definitely a fun, entertaining evening!
We stayed in yesterday for the holiday. It’s just way too hot to do anything. My mom recently moved so she no longer has a pool and my dad was working. Baby bro is overseas. It was just another day for us! I took the day for myself, to relax and spend time with Matt and my babies. I did a few indoor training sessions with Khloee and Wynston, which they always appreciate. We played some fetch and Wynston slept a lot of the day away!
Luckily my dogs nor cats are afraid of fireworks. There was, however, some nice person who decided the side of our house would be the best place to set of their massive, loud fireworks. The torture lasted about an hour. I’m not trying to be a party pooper, but let’s be honest…do you want someone shooting off fireworks right outside your door? Probably not.
Our 4th of July was extremely uneventful, and I’m okay with that. I prefer not to melt away in this extreme heat we call the Arizona summer, so I like being inside. I’m also much more susceptible to sun burn and sweating after a new recent health diagnosis. Give me the air conditioning please!
Did you do anything fun for the 4th of July? How did your dogs or cats do with the sound of fireworks?

I’m sorry your 4th wasn’t very eventful! It’s definitely a downer when you have family overseas.
We didn’t do anything for the 4th, either. We ate left over pizza because it’s too hot to bbq here (99 degrees is hot for Oregon) and the dogs are terrified of the bangs. We had a pretty rough night with the pups. Next year I’m getting some heavier drugs from the vet. Zoe refused to walk outside both last night after it was over and this morning and she wouldn’t eat. It was terrible.

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear about Zoe! That’s just awful. I definitely didn’t mind our uneventful day – it’s just as well we stayed inside. I get nervous about even driving on major holidays because people drink and drive. Hopefully next year there will be something better for Zoe so the poor thing won’t be so scared.

My mom and I didn’t do anything either. We live in Coastal Virginia so we had both heat and humidity! The fireworks didn’t bother me or 2 of my felines. But the other 2, well we didn’t see them until the next morning! My neighbor-friend Bella hated the fireworks. She was all alone since her mom had to work so she barked all night. I tried telling her it was ok a couple of times but she was not listening to me. I enjoy your blog and read all your posts! Keep up the good work!!

Thank you very much! I’m glad to hear the fireworks didn’t bother you – that always makes things much easier!
