I’ve been attending pet events with dogs for many years. It’s absolutely one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy pet events because I’m surrounded by other like-minded individuals who are all there for the love of pets. I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of visiting pet events with different dogs, and I’d like to share with you my tips for preparing to attend a pet event with your dog.
Tips for Preparing to Attend a Pet Event With Your Dog
Know Your Dog
Before you bring your pup to an event, be sure that you’re indeed making the right decision. Some dogs may not do well in large, crowded social situations. Maybe your dog is reactive or leash aggressive. Maybe they get nervous around children or loud noises. I know it’s difficult to leave your dog at home, but honestly it may be the best thing for them. If you have an inkling that a pet event may cause your dog substantial stress or anxiety, leave them at home. If you think they may act out, become aggressive or cause a disruption, leave them at home. It’s best for everyone involved.
Pack Treats
I always have treats on hand for my dog at a pet event. I reward them with treats for being well-behaved. If someone wants to pet Wynston, I hand the person a treat and ask them to feed it to him. I use pet events as a training experience each time, so I always have treats for positive reinforcement.
Pack Water
Of course you don’t want to forget plenty of water for you and your dog! Pack extra water if the event is outdoors. You’ll want to be sure that everyone is staying hydrated.
Bring a Stroller
If you have a small, senior or injured dog, consider using a pet stroller for the event. A stroller will ensure their comfort and safety throughout the event. I always put Wynston in his Gen7Pets stroller. I can stash all of my personal items in it, and I don’t have to worry about Wynston getting stepped on. In his stroller, Wynston is completely relaxed. It brings him a sense of security. I wouldn’t attend an event without our stroller. Read this post to see what pet stroller may be best for your dog!
Help With Their Anxiety
If you think your dog would enjoy a pet event but you need something to take the edge off their anxiety (for, let’s say, a car ride) think about using hemp oil. Hemp oil can naturally assist with a dog’s stress and nervousness. I prefer HempMy Pet for my hemp oil and hemp treat needs.
Charge Your Phone
You can’t take amazing photos of your dog at the event if your phone is dead! Make sure it’s charged up and ready to go before heading to the event.
Check the Weather
Most events in Arizona are outdoors so it’s imperative that you check the weather. If you have a breed like a Pug or Bulldog, they may not do well in warmer temperatures. It could rain, in which case you’ll need to be prepared for that. Always check the weather when doing anything with your pet!
Pack Necessities
This may be an obvious tip, but make sure to pack all of your dog’s basic necessities for the event. You’ll also want to be sure that your dog’s collar ID tags are updated. Lord forbid your dog were to get startled by something and try to run away. It’s always best to be overly cautious. Other items to bring include a water bowl, leash, sunscreen if it’s an outdoor event, umbrella for rain or as a source of shade, and waste bags.
